| Save a Meal, Save a Life ShelterBox - Home to 10,500 victims in Myanmar and 4,000 victims in Sichuan ... and thousands more homeless need your help
|
To save a meal is easy; your saving of a meal can help save a life through providing the disasters victims with a rugged shelter to ten persons as their home! The cost of a meal, be it $2, $20 or $200, is part of the daily routine. Be it for business, social, family or hunger, we consume 3 meals a day as a minimum standard of living. You have the power to create meaningful and magical change to the life of others simply through your saving of a meal! I appeal to you to skip a meal, have a light meal or convert the business entertainment meal as donation to save a meal that would help us to build a home to the disasters victims in Myanmar and China. To initiate this project, Rotary Club of Bugis Junction leads the way with an initial donation of S$5,000 and seek your help to support us on this effort. What is ShelterBox? The purpose of Shelter Box is to provide victims of disaster in Myanmar and Sichuan with shelter. As of January 2007, ShelterBox has sent aid to 31 different countries, providing shelter for approaching 500,000 people. Why is ShelterBox appropriate? It is very encourage noting the various humanitarian efforts by governments, organizations and individuals to help the victims. Disasters - whatever the cause - often result in huge numbers of people left homless. The initial challenge is often to get medical aid to the injured and make sure everyone has access to water and food. However another essential is shelter. That's because without protection from the elements survival can be a a real battle - particular for the young, old and infant. Our focus in this humanitarian effort is to provide immediate shelter to the victims to house them during the reconstruction, which takes months or even as long as year from other disaster experience we gathered. What is in a ShelerBox? Each ShelterBox is a large, rugged, green plastic container that holds a 10-person tent and a range of other equipment, such as: • Thermal blankets, insulated ground sheets & insecticide treated mosquito nets • A wood burning stove, or • A multi-fuel stove that can burn anything from diesel to old paint! • Cooking pans, utensils, bowls and mugs • Collapsible water containers and water purification tablets • Basic tool kit –hammer, axe, saw, pliers, hoe head, trenching shovel, rope etc • A small, children’s pack containing drawing books, crayons, pens etc. The tents have built in mosquito screens, integral groundsheets, good ventilation, internal privacy screens. It also has a heavy-duty flysheet that can prolong the life of the tent by eight to 10 months by protecting it from the UV damage caused by intense tropical sun. [Click to enlarge image]
